InsureAg.org and affiliate web sites are owned and operated by a person who grew up on a Midwestern dairy farm.

His father tried to make it on rented land and minimal capital in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Even then, when the cost of machinery, fuel and ag chemicals was much less, it was difficult to support a family on the rocky ground of Southwestern Wisconsin.

Today, family farms are consolidating into larger operations to survive. Farms now have CEO’s and CFO’s. It’s a much different world but the challenges are now multiplied for those still in the business on a grander scale.

Much of the expense of operating an agri-business is fixed. There’s not much any of us can do about oil prices, other than strive to use and develop our own fuels. There’s not much we can do about the price of machinery. However, we can do something about the cost and availability of insurance.
